Nutraceutical Ingredients

Dr Stephen DeFelice coined the term “Nutraceutical” from “Nutrition” and “Pharmaceutical” in 1989. Nutraceuticals might be defined as substances that have physiological benefits or provide protection against chronic diseases. Nutraceuticals may be used to improve health, delay the ageing process, prevent chronic diseases, increase life expectancy, or support the structure or function of the body. Nutraceuticals are of particular interest as a way to reduce the often-expensive disease treatment approaches that are currently employed in developed countries. The nutraceutical industry encompasses three main segments which include functional foods, dietary supplements, and herbal/natural products. Unlike Pharmaceutical supplements which have high concentrations of a single or small group of vitamins and minerals, nutraceuticals have all the benefits of natural foods.
